Controlling shear band instability by nanoscale heterogeneities in metallic nanoglasses

چکیده
Abstract Strain localization during plastic deformation drastically reduces the shear band stability in metallic glasses, ultimately leading to catastrophic failure. Therefore, improving plasticity of glasses has been a long-standing goal for several decades. In this regard, nanoglass, novel type glass, proposed exhibit differences short and medium range order at interfacial regions, which could promote formation transformation zones. present work, by introducing heterogeneities nanoscale, both crystalline amorphous, significant improvements are realized micro-compression tests. Both amorphous dispersions resulted smaller strain bursts deformation. Shear Band Formation in Bulk Metallic Glasses
In recent times, there has been a growing interest in the machining of amorphous metallic alloys, which are also called bulk metallic glasses (BMGs). These materials differ from common polycrystalline metallic alloys, because their atoms do not assemble on a crystalline lattice, and as a result, they have unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties. A number of BMGs have been found to ...
متن کاملInstability Analysis and Free Volume Simulations of Shear Band Directions and Arrangements in Notched Metallic Glasses
As a commonly used method to enhance the ductility in bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), the introduction of geometric constraints blocks and confines the propagation of the shear bands, reduces the degree of plastic strain on each shear band so that the catastrophic failure is prevented or delayed, and promotes the formation of multiple shear bands. The clustering of multiple shear bands near notch...
متن کاملMicrostructural eects on shear instability and shear band spacing
A constitutive relation that accounts for the thermally activated dislocation motion and microstructure interaction is used to study the stability of a homogeneous solution of equations governing the simple shearing deformations of a thermoviscoplastic body. An instability criterion and an upper bound for the growth rate of the in®nitesimal deformations superimposed on the homogeneous solution ...
متن کاملShear - Velocity Heterogeneities in the Upper Mantle
Long-period surface waves are used to map lateral heterogeneities of velocity and anisotropy in the upper mantle. The dispersion curves are expanded in spherical harmonics up to degree 6 and inverted to find the depth structure. The data are corrected for the effect of surface layers and both Love and Rayleigh waves are used. Shear wave velocity and shear polarization anisotropy can be resolved...
متن کاملWaveguiding in nanoscale metallic apertures.
We study the optical properties of subwavelength metallic waveguides made of nanoscale apertures in a metal. We develop analytical expressions for the fundamental optical modes in apertures. The results are in excellent agreement with finite element calculations. This model provides a physical understanding of the role of non-perfect metallic walls, and of the shape and size of the apertures. T...
